How do you think artificial intelligence will reshape the future of journalism?
I believe this matter should be viewed from two perspectives.
On one hand, AI is like providing every journalist with a 'super assistant'. In the past, to write a financial report news piece, journalists had to sift through a mountain of data and then painstakingly write it out. Now, AI can read a financial report in a second, directly generate an article with accurate data, and at lightning speed. News with fixed patterns, such as sports results or stock market movements, can all be handled by AI. This frees journalists from repetitive labor, allowing them more time to focus on more important tasks, such as in-depth investigations and interviews.
Another example is news recommendation. Previously, we all read the same front page of a newspaper, and everyone saw the same content. Now, AI can push content that you care about most, based on your interests. If you're interested in technology, it will recommend more new product launches; if someone else is interested in pets, it will show them more cute cats and dogs. News has become more 'personally customized'.
On the other hand, the challenges are also significant.
The biggest problem is 'fake news'. AI can write articles quickly, but it can also spread misinformation just as fast. Moreover, the misinformation it creates can appear incredibly realistic, with images and videos (like deepfakes), making it difficult for ordinary people to distinguish. AI recommendation algorithms can also trap you in an 'information cocoon' or 'echo chamber', meaning it continuously feeds you what you like. Over time, you might stop hearing other perspectives, and your views could become increasingly extreme.
Therefore, I believe that the future of journalism will not be AI replacing journalists, but rather a model of 'human-machine collaboration'.
AI will be responsible for processing data, rapidly generating information, finding news leads, and even assisting with fact-checking. However, the final judgment, empathetic interviews, uncovering the human stories behind events, and deciding what news is valuable and ethical—these still depend on humans.
The role of journalists will transform from 'information carriers' to 'truth investigators', 'storytellers', and 'masters of AI tools'. They need to understand how to better utilize this powerful AI tool, while also being wary of the risks it brings, upholding the bottom line of journalistic truth and objectivity. Ultimately, technology itself is neither good nor bad; the key lies in the people who use it.
