Okay, this is an interesting question, let me think...

If I could only choose one Doraemon gadget, my choice would be...

If I truly could only pick one, I wouldn't choose something world-altering or overpowered, nor something too "cheaty" like the fourth-dimensional pocket itself.

My answer is: The Anywhere Door.

Yes, that ordinary-looking pink door.

Why this one?

Because it perfectly solves two of the biggest pains of modern life: time and distance. The change it brings isn't some earth-shattering magical transformation, but a tangible improvement in the "quality of life" and happiness.

Imagine life after having it:

  1. Say goodbye to commuting, gain 2 hours every day Every morning, no more squeezing onto subways or sitting in traffic. You can leisurely eat breakfast, then just "open the door" to arrive at work. Same thing after work – "open the door" and you're home. Just this alone would significantly boost your happiness. The extra time could be used for exercise, reading, family, or simply relaxing.

  2. The world is vast, and I want to see it Want to stroll along the Seine in Paris? See the snow in Hokkaido? Witness the animal migration on the African savannah? No need for complex planning, expensive flights, or long vacations. On a weekend afternoon, you could open the door to have coffee on the other side of the world and be back home for a good night's sleep. Travel becomes as easy as going to the convenience store downstairs.

  3. Zero distance for family and friends This is what I value most. Parents are back home, friends are in different cities. With the Anywhere Door, distance ceases to be a problem. You can pop home anytime for dinner with your parents, or surprise a friend by showing up at their birthday party. Family bonds, friendships, and love won't be strained by physical distance anymore.

Why not choose something else?

Many might pick the Time Machine or the What-If Phone Booth – seemingly "more powerful" gadgets. But I think they carry too much risk.

  • Time Machine: Sounds cool – you could fix regrets or witness history. But the "butterfly effect" is terrifying. The tiniest action in the past could make your present unrecognizable, or even erase you. That level of uncertainty is too much for me.
  • What-If Phone Booth: This is even more extreme, creating an entire parallel world. But that world is artificial, built on your "what-if." I prefer this real world, with its laughter, tears, bitterness, and sweetness. Getting lost in "what-ifs" can make you lose yourself.
  • Memory Bread: The ultimate exam cheat! For my student self, it would have been a dream come true. But life's challenges can't be solved just by memorization. Plus, eating too much bread would just make you feel stuffed.

In short, the Anywhere Door doesn't carry the massive unknown risks of other gadgets. It won't turn you into a superhero or make you rich overnight. It simply, quietly, eliminates geographical barriers, giving you back more time and freedom.

It allows you and the people you care about to better and more freely experience this vast and real world. For me, that's more than enough.
