Hi, regarding cold sores (what we often call "getting a fever blister"), I've had them before too, so I'd like to share some typical symptoms with you, hoping it helps.

Typical Symptoms of Oral Herpes (Cold Sores)

Getting this is actually quite common; many people have experienced it. The whole process can generally be divided into several distinct stages:

1. Early Warning Stage (It's coming!)

  • Tingling, Itching, or Burning Sensation: This is the very first sign. One or two days before the blister actually appears, you might feel something off in a specific area around your lips or mouth – it might be itchy, have a slightly numb or tingling sensation, or feel warm. Experienced individuals know at this stage, "Oh no, it's starting."

2. Blister Stage (It's here!)

  • Appearance of Small Blisters: Soon, in that area that felt off, a cluster or row of small, fluid-filled blisters will appear. They are usually clear or pale yellow and are grouped together.
  • Location: The most common location is along the edge of the lips, or where the lip meets the skin. However, they can sometimes appear under the nose, on the chin, or on the cheek.
  • Slightly Painful: At this stage, the blisters might be a bit painful, especially when touched.

3. Weeping/Ulceration Stage (The most uncomfortable stage)

  • Blisters Burst: These small blisters will eventually burst on their own, and the fluid inside will leak out. At this point, the sore is open, wet, and can be quite painful.
  • Most Contagious: Be careful! The fluid that leaks out during this stage has the highest viral load and is the most contagious. So, absolutely do not touch it with your hands, and avoid sharing cups, towels, or having intimate contact with others.

4. Crusting Stage (Almost healed!)

  • Formation of Yellow or Brown Scab: The sore will slowly dry out and then form a yellowish-brown or brown hard crust (scab). This scab might not look very appealing and can feel tight.
  • Prone to Cracking: If you make too many facial expressions at this time, such as laughing loudly or opening your mouth wide, the scab might crack, bleed a little, and be painful. Keeping your lips moisturized can help.

5. Healing Stage (Finally over)

  • Scab Falls Off: Finally, once the new skin underneath has healed, the scab will fall off on its own.
  • Skin Redness: The area where the scab just fell off might be a bit pink or red, but it will return to its normal color in a few days.
  • Usually No Scarring: The good news is that as long as you don't pick at it or cause an infection, cold sores generally do not leave scars once they heal.

First Outbreak Might Be More Severe

If this is your first time experiencing a cold sore, the symptoms might be more severe than during subsequent recurrences. In addition to the symptoms above, you might also experience:

  • Fever
  • Headache, muscle aches
  • Sore throat
  • Swollen, bleeding gums
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck

The entire process, from the initial sensation to complete healing, usually lasts about 1 to 2 weeks. While quite annoying, it will heal on its own. If you feel the symptoms are particularly severe or if outbreaks are frequent, it's best to see a doctor, who can help you manage it.
