How to check the remaining investment limit in my NISA account?

Hey there! That's a great question. When people first start using NISA, this is a common concern – the fear of accidentally exceeding the investment limit. Don't worry, checking it is actually quite simple.

Generally, there are a few methods you can use. Pick the one you find most convenient:

Method 1: Log in to your brokerage's official website or app (Most Recommended)

This is the most direct and fastest method. Whether you're using Rakuten Securities, SBI Securities, or another brokerage, the operations are largely similar.

  1. Log in to your account: Open your brokerage's website or mobile app.
  2. Find the NISA dedicated page: After logging in, there's usually a very prominent entry in the menu for 「NISA」 or 「NISA口座」.
  3. Check your limit usage: Once you click in, there will typically be a section called 「非課税投資枠の利用状況」 (Tax-Exempt Investment Limit Usage) or something similar.

On this page, you will clearly see:

  • This year's total limit (e.g., Growth Investment Limit ¥2.4 million, Tsumitate Investment Limit ¥1.2 million)
  • Amount already used (how much you've already bought this year)
  • Remaining available limit (how much more you can buy)

It will be clearly displayed like this, using charts or numbers, making it easy to understand.

// Example
Growth Investment Limit (成長投資枠)
Total Limit: ¥2,400,000
Used Limit: ¥800,000
Remaining Limit: ¥1,600,000

Method 2: Check your "取引報告書" (Transaction Report)

Every time you buy an investment product (e.g., mutual funds, stocks) with your NISA account, the brokerage will send you an electronic or paper "取引報告書" (transaction report).

Besides the details of the current transaction, this report usually includes the cumulative investment amount in your current NISA account. You can use this number to calculate the remaining amount by subtracting it from the total limit.

This method is slightly more troublesome, as it requires you to find the report and calculate yourself, making it less direct than Method 1.

Method 3: The ultimate solution – Ask customer service directly

If you really can't find it on the website, or you're unsure about the numbers you see, just contact your brokerage's customer service.

  • Phone customer service
  • Online chat customer service

Directly ask them: "I'd like to inquire about my remaining NISA limit for this year?" (今年のNISAの非課税投資枠は、あといくら残っていますか?)

They will be very happy to help you check.

A few tips

  • Limits are calculated annually: NISA's tax-exempt limit resets on January 1st each year. If you don't use up this year's limit, it cannot be carried over to next year.
  • New NISA's two limits are separate: Starting from 2024, the new NISA is divided into "Growth Investment Limit (成長投資枠)" and "Tsumitate Investment Limit (つみたて投資枠)". These two limits are calculated separately, so pay attention when checking them to avoid confusion.
  • Selling products does not restore the current year's limit: It's important to note that even if you sell NISA products purchased this year, the limit you've already used this year will not be restored. New limits will only become available on January 1st of the following year.

Hope this helps you! In summary, the most convenient way is to directly log in to your brokerage's app or website to check.
