What is World Cup?
World Cup
The FIFA World Cup, often simply called the World Cup, is an international association football competition contested by the senior men's national teams of the members of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport's global governing body. As the most prestigious football tournament in the world, it is also the most widely viewed and followed single sporting event globally. The championship has been awarded every four years since the inaugural tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not held because of the Second World War.

History and Evolution
The concept of a global football tournament was pioneered by a group of visionary French football administrators, led in the 1920s by Jules Rimet. The first-ever World Cup was hosted and won by Uruguay in 1930. The original trophy, named the Jules Rimet Trophy, was permanently awarded to Brazil in 1970 after they won the tournament for the third time.
The current FIFA World Cup Trophy was introduced in 1974. Made of 18-karat gold with a malachite base, it depicts two human figures holding up the Earth. Unlike its predecessor, it is not permanently awarded to a winning nation. Instead, the champions receive a bronze, gold-plated replica.
The tournament has expanded significantly over its history, from 13 teams in 1930 to 32 teams since 1998. The format is set to expand again to 48 teams starting with the 2026 tournament.
Tournament Format
The World Cup takes place in two main stages:
-
Qualification Phase: This takes place over the preceding three years and is used to determine which teams qualify for the tournament phase. The qualification process involves over 200 national teams from FIFA's six continental confederations (AFC, CAF, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, OFC, and UEFA).
-
Final Tournament: Currently involving 32 nations, this phase is held over about a month in a pre-determined host nation(s). It consists of:
- Group Stage: The 32 teams are drawn into eight groups of four. Each team plays every other team in its group once. The top two teams from each group advance.
- Knockout Stage: A single-elimination tournament featuring the 16 qualified teams, including the Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the World Cup Final.
