What is Diabetes?

Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes, is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose (or blood sugar), which over time leads to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves. The condition arises either because the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (a hormone that regulates blood sugar) or because the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.

Types of Diabetes

There are several types of diabetes, each with different causes and characteristics. The most common forms are Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes.

TypeKey CharacteristicsCommon OnsetManagement
Type 1 DiabetesAn autoimmune condition where the body's immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. People with Type 1 produce very little or no insulin.Typically in childhood or adolescence, but can occur at any age.Daily insulin injections or use of an insulin pump is essential for survival.
Type 2 DiabetesThe most common type, where the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or the body's cells don't respond to insulin properly (insulin resistance).Primarily in adults, but increasingly seen in children and adolescents due to rising obesity rates.Healthy lifestyle (diet, exercise), oral medications, and sometimes insulin.
Gestational DiabetesHigh blood sugar that develops during pregnancy and usually disappears after giving birth.During pregnancy.Diet control, exercise, and sometimes medication. It increases the mother's and child's risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.
PrediabetesA condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as Type 2 diabetes. Can occur at any age.Lifestyle changes can often prevent or delay the progression to Type 2 diabetes.

Global Impact and Statistics

Diabetes is a major global health issue with a rapidly growing prevalence.

MetricData (Source: International Diabetes Federation, 2021)
Global Prevalence537 million adults (20-79 years) are living with diabetes.
Future ProjectionsThis number is projected to rise to 643 million by 2030 and 783 million by 2045.
Undiagnosed CasesAn estimated 1 in 2 adults with diabetes are undiagnosed.
MortalityDiabetes caused 6.7 million deaths in 2021.
Health ExpenditureDiabetes accounted for at least USD 966 billion in health expenditure.

Common Symptoms

Recognizing the signs of diabetes is crucial for early diagnosis and management. Common symptoms include:

  • Frequent urination (Polyuria)
  • Increased thirst (Polydipsia)
  • Increased hunger (Polyphagia)
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue and lack of energy
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing sores or frequent infections
  • Tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands or feet (in Type 2)

Management and Prevention

While there is no cure for diabetes, it can be managed effectively.

  • Management: The cornerstone of diabetes management is maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This includes a balanced diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy body weight, and avoiding tobacco use. Depending on the type, management also involves regular blood sugar monitoring and medication (such as oral drugs or insulin therapy).

  • Prevention: A healthy lifestyle can effectively prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes. Key preventive measures include achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight and engaging in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week.
